MOVONOMY.com - Search Inside The Movie

Project Brief
To create a movie search engine for the greatest and most popular feature films ever made (English Language). A search engine that enables users to search for any line from almost any film and to watch the scene they were looking for immediately.

Execution
The user can enter a line or some words from a film scene they want to see. When they run their search, the MOVONOMY search engine delivers pages of Google-like results, ordered by relevance. Each search result shows a thumnail still image taken from the timepoint in the movie where the search result matched. Alongside the scene image is shown the line of dialogue or narration that matched the search as well as the lines before and after in the soundtrack.

The user can click any search result to play the matched scene starting 10 seconds before the precise timpoint that the match occurred. For copyright reasons, no clip can be shown that is longer than 60 seconds and streamed clips are only delivered at very small dimension with low bitrate streaming.

Background
Originally begun as a research project, MOVONOMY has now emerged as the world's first and only movie search engine of its kind. No other movie search engine lets users search inside movies to find specific scenes based on the words or lines searched for.

Features & Technical
The MOVONOMY search engine contains thousands of movies, each encoded into H.264 hinted MOV format for streaming via Quicktime streaming server. No movie clip streamed in this way can be cached, copied, saved or stolen. Great care was taken in the preparation of each movie, with faithful preservation of original aspect ratios whether 4x3, 16x9 or 21x9.

The MOVONOMY index contains millions of lines of narration or dialogue, all extracted from the original DVD subtitle data sets with extreme accuracy in the conversion of subtitle bitmaps to text and very high precision in the timing data.

Users can also search for individual movies (or groups of movies) by title or by director. Users can then confine their search to just the movies they select. This makes it possible, for example, easily to see how many times James Bond says "shaken, not stirred" in all 23 Bond films so far made.

The MOVONOMY engine also contains many hundreds of thousands of still images and it allows users to browse the entire set of stills for any movie in the system and to then select a scene to watch just by clicking the relevant still image.

Try It Out
To try out MOVONOMY for yourself, please go to
www.movonomy.com and sign up a free account. This will enable you to run as many searches as you want but public accounts cannot see the streamed movie clips. If you would like to try out a MOVONOMY account with full access to all the streamed clips, please send an email request to admin@movonomy.com.
