Searching Inside Video

In our business, "video search" does not mean finding a video to watch by some kind of meta data search on its title, keywords or description. To us, video search is about finding a scene within a video. This is what we mean by video search:

The Video Search Results
Each search result shows a still image of the matched scene, the title of the video that matched and the exact line from the soundtrack where the match occurred. To play the video starting at the correct timepoint, the user can click the scene image and the video will be streamed from that point.

Timepoint Playing
In the above example, the user clicks the second search result and is shown the scene from Raging Bull which parodies the classic scene from On The Waterfront. Precise video timepoint playing is an essential componet of our video search application and can only be achieved with genuine streaming, either via Flash Streaming Server (H.264 MP4 or FLV) or Quicktime Streaming Server (H.264 hinted MOV).

Why Is This Useful?
Well, Amazon has invested enormous resources into its "search inside the book" service, and it continues to do so because it sells more books than it otherwise might. Would LoveFilm.com rent out more movies if they let their film loving customers search for scenes from the greatest movies ever made? Probably not, but wouldn't it be great if they did it anyway?

Video is the most unstructured yet the most information-rich type of content on the Internet. There are many solutions to searching for WHOLE videos on the web, but we at Doovle are looking further ahead. We are interested in searching FOR SCENES within whole videos so that users can find what they actually want, rather than what the SEO industry has in mind for them on any given day.
